4. Netweaver Java Update - When to use SUM Manually Prepared Directory?

Let's assume that we need to update Servercore component to overcome vulnerabilities. My current version is NW 7.5 SP31 PL11.

For example - Mentioned software component servercore have SCA dependencies - Say UMEADMIN and ENGINEAPI

Quick Point:

1) SUM Manually Prepared Directory should be used only for updating patch levels of same software component version.

Netweaver Java Update - When to use SUM Manually Prepared Directory?

We can find dependencies in our corresponding Software File - Content Info/SCA Dependencies in SAP Software center.

1.1 If we have any SCA Dependencies, then SUM Manually Prepared Directory Method is Mandatory to avoid confusions/hassles.

1.2 If we don't have SCA Dependencies - Independent Software Component like ADS, Visual Framework, then we can use telnet as simple quick method. However, please be cautious while updating PL.

   Example - Servercore - SP31 PL11 to SP31 PL15 -> To overcome vulnerability.

Intermediatory patch levels are not required for Java Patch updates. Only latest PL version is sufficient.

 2) We can't update from one SP version PL to Another SP version PL via SUM Manually Prepared Directory. It will result in Adverse effect if tried via telnet.

      Example - Servercore - SP31 PL11 to SP32 PL3. To achieve this, we need to consider update Netweaver Java Stack itself to SP32 . Use "Update Netweaver" option in Maintenance planner.

Quick steps for Manually Prepared Dir:

We need to use "Plan a Minimum Software Change" and select "Add Java Patches".

We need to select "Unchanged Components only" - since we haven't done any change in SPs. It won't be added to our Stack XML.

We can select latest patches (Say servercore) and select "Validate dependencies". It will add UMEADMIN and ENGINEAPI, rest of the dependencies)

Maintenance planner will automatically calculate dependencies without fail and finalizes correct patch level whichever required for the dependencies.

Use "download files" - Push to Download Basket OR download all files manually.

Once all files downloaded, we can use SUM Manually Prepared directory method.

In this method, we can easily update our system with latest patches.

If tried to update higher SP version, then we will get below error.

Rejected due to following reason(s):
Component sap.com/XYZ cannot be updated to higher SP level
Components sap.com/XYZ is part of SAP stack definition file.

Refer below note for reference.

Note 2282200 - Selection of latest PLs vers6

It's for PI but we can consider generally.

Thanks for visiting !!!
